Preservation
Staten Island cemeteries are a valuable source of both family and community history and as such, need
to be preserved. Many cemeteries have already been abandoned or are falling victim to the ravages
of time and nature. Fortunately, there is an increasing public awareness that something must be done
to preserve this history for future generations. Friends Of Abandoned Cemeteries of Staten Island (FACSI)
has and continues to be a leader in these efforts. Recently, we have become aware of other organizations who
have joined in this effort. If you would like to help or just want to know which cemeteries these organizations
support, please contact them directly. If your organization is actively involved in cemetery preservation and
would like to be included on this list, please contact
SIGenealogy .
- FACSI organization, Friends of Abandoned
Cemeteries of Staten Island.
- Richmond County Savings Foundation, as reported in the
Staten Island Advance.
- Restoration of Rev. John L. Lenhart's monument at Bethel Cemetery was discussed in a Staten Island
Advance article, and also at the
Tottenville History and
Sep 2004 news pages of
Tottenville Historical Society (slow website).
- A note of caution regarding status of church cemeteries: (Thanks to FACSI) Generally, churches
did not apply to the State for a charter. When abandoned, these cemeteries,
therefore, were not the State's responsibility but the responsibility of the
township - in our case, New York City. The City is overwhelmed with the
problem of abandoned cemeteries and contacting the Real Estate Division of
New York City about Abandoned cemeteries is a fairly useless exercise,
although the agency is commonly cited as the governing authority. In a case
where a cemetery is 'State regulated' - this is to say it is incorporated,
the state audits the cemetery's books, and responds to complaints by the
public.

Some members of the First Baptist Church in Concord relocated to
Richmond Avenue in Graniteville as the North Baptist Church and there started
a cemetery (Hillside); later in the 19th century, some members of the second church split off into
the Graniteville (or First) Baptist Church on Willowbrook Road. There they
established a small cemetery that grew into Lake Cemetery and this was also
known as First Baptist Church Cemetery. Both later churches and cemeteries
stem from the original Old Clove Baptist or First Baptist Church in Concord.

Church closing in 2015
St. Mary of the Assumption Parish is Roman Catholic. The church and cemetery were established on Walker Street in 1853. The church moved to its current location 2230 Richmond Terrace in 1883 but unfortunately it is scheduled to close in 2015 and combine with Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. The cemetery is still located on Walker Street and will continue to be maintained by the Archdiocese of New York.
The early burial records did not survive. The records start in the early 1900s, with the exception of information taken from grave stones or provided by families. There are several burials listed with no row or grave number, this information is not available. There is an area for free burials of infants or stillborn.
Please note the date of death could be the date of interment. Interment dates are usually one or two days after the date of death. The records were transcribed to the best of our ability and are in poor condition. If you find a discrepancy, please make that correction in your own files. We will not make any alterations to this listing. If you find these records not compatible to your own family history, you are encouraged to seek death certificates or other legal vital records through the New York City Municipal Archives located in Manhattan. This cemetery interment listing is provided as a courtesy from Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries, Inc. to aid you in your genealogy or family history search only and should be not used as legal vital records.
At this time the burial records are available only upon request. Please contact Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries, Inc. at SICemetery at aol dot com.
