Obituaries
- For obituaries from about 1886 - 1920, see the Staten Island Institute
of Arts and Sciences. They have a collection of newspapers, though NOT
complete, for this time frame. They will do research for you at a rate of
$15/hour minimum one hour for non-members, plus copying costs. You can also
go there and do your own research, for a fee. SIIAS
page.
- For obituaries from 1921 - about 1941 you should know the date. The St. George branch
of the New York Public Library has microfilmed the Staten Island Advance and you can go there
and peruse. I have heard they will copy the obit for you for copying costs if you have the date.
You can also use the SIIAS (above). St. George library

"Please remove the Staten Island Advance Library from your list of
obituary resources from 1942 to the present. Unfortunately, the Advance
will no longer have a Library and these files will no longer be
accessible. Only obituaries after 1991, when our electronic archive
begins, will be available to the public."
For obituaries from about 1942 - Current you can call the Staten Island Advance. Call
(718) 981-1234 and ask for the Library; they have an index (which is not open to the public)
which they will check for you. You may also use the St. George Library (above) or the
SIIAS (above). The New Dorp Branch of the New York Public Library also has obits from the 1970s.

- Obituaries for approximately the past 30 days are available online at the
Staten Island Advance Obituary Archive.
You may also use any of the above resources.
- Note: for all time frames see our Obituaries Board
Please consider posting some Staten Island-related obits here for others to use! Kindly note,
this board is for the posting of obituaries only and all queries will be deleted.
- A good note about obits etc from Russell K Brown on NYC-ROOTS:
- In years gone by
there were two common forms of death announcements, the death notice and
the funeral notice. Obituaries were much less used. Today's obit takes
the place of all three. Examples:
- Death Notice:
Gen. Robert E. Lee died at his home yesterday following a brief illness.
He was in his 64th year.
- Funeral Notice:
The friends and acquaintances of Gen. and Mrs. Robert E. Lee are invited
to attend the funeral of the former from St. Paul's Episcopal Church at
4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Gen. Lee died yesterday at his home. He
was in the 64th year of his age.
- Obituary:
Gen. Robert E. Lee died at his home on October 12, 1870, following a
brief illness. He was 63 years old. Gen. Lee was a graduate of the U.S.
Military Academy, class of 1829. He attained the rank of colonel in the
Old Army, and was general in chief of the southern forces in the late
War Between the States. At the time of his death he was president of
Washington College. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Mary Anna
Custis Lee, three sons and two daughters. [Followed by some laudatory
comments and sometimes a poetic or classical quotation].
