Notes:From
The Staten Islander August 1917The fifth division of the Staten Island Naval Militia, with an enlistment of 141 men, 30 of whom are the fife and drum corps. has been mustered into active service and left on Thursday (08/09/1917) morning for the training camp at Tarrytown, N.Y., the second of the Staten Island divisions to leave. The Fifth follows the second division, the first Staten Island division to be formed, now in training aboard the ship Granite State, in the North River.
Lieutenant George G. Payne acted as commanding officer of the division, and Ensigns Dwight Teaney and Clarence Sage were also with the division. The Troop F motor truck assisted with the luggage.
Recruiting work has been urged forward for the seventh and eleventh divisions, our remaining divisions, and over 100 men are needed to swell the still increasing number, which, it is hoped, can reach the number of Staten Island’s quota in the select draft, or 760 men.
